CPI conducted two Distributor Education Program (DEP) sessions in April to support members and their end-user customers in South East Asia. The first event was coordinated with the Food Asia 2016 trade show held in Singapore from April 12 – 15.

This DEP focused on innovative merchandising ideas for the foodservice sector utilizing specialized chilled sub-primal cuts from a primary processor in Western Canada. The event also provided an excellent opportunity to illustrate meat quality points of differentiation between Canadian pork and other imported pork offered in the marketplace.

The event took place on the trade show floor and was presented three times during the Food & Hotel Asia trade show. On-lookers were very interested in Canadian boning styles and portion-cutting ideas. The quality of the pork and the presentation generated a lot of interest and discussion by observers about pork quality and Canadian supply partners.

The second DEP was held in Manila on April 19 to support a trading house member and their distributor partner with multiple locations in South East Asia. This event, with thirty participants, consisted of two components conducted over a three-hour training session.

The first component featured a comprehensive overview of the Canadian pork industry along with quality and safety assurance systems and recommended storage handling and thawing procedures based on Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) requirements for Canadian registered plants. This provided an emphasis on food safety and cold chain management practices for the region.

The second component featured a half-carcass cutting demonstration focusing on Canadian carcass-breaking specifications vs. EU and USA cutting styles. This was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the differences in workmanship, meat quality and specifications offered by Canada and competing supply partners in the market place. The event was well received and once the cutting session began all participants were out of their seats crowded around the cutting area to take it all in.

“These hands-on education and training sessions are very important for importer distributors,” says Michael Young, CPI’s Vice President Technical Programs & Marketing Services. “They have many pork supply partners to choose from and they need product quality and safety information about Canadian pork to effectively market and sell our products in their marketplace.”
