It’s important to realize that, despite the complexity of the political landscape in Ukraine, its economic performance has finally begun to show growth. The reforms initiated two years ago coupled with the significant financial assistance from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and Western Governments have created a launching pad for economic take off—similar to what happened in Poland and other Eastern European countries.
The fact that the Hrivna (Ukrainian currency) has begun to show some strength and that foreign investments have tripled in the last two years is a good indication that the Ukrainian economy is moving in the right direction. One of the most important objectives of Ukrainian economic planners and strategists is to secure the gradual growth of living standards. According to Stefan Berezniak, the chief economist in the ministry of agriculture of Ukraine, "We are in the process of creating a spirit of competition between our domestic producers of meat, dairy and other agricultural products and the import segment.”
It’s also interesting to note that in the statement from Mr. Pavlenko, the Ukrainian minister of agricultural where, among a number of points, he confirmed that Ukraine will never follow the Russian model of supporting domestic production by limiting or banning imports. He underlined that Ukrainian agricultural policies will never be protectionist.
Canada is perceived in Ukraine as one of their closest friends and partners. Canadian pork exporters will benefit from a strategic approach to the Ukrainian market. Perhaps not immediately, but certainly in the near future Ukraine could become a promising market for Canadian pork.

Canada Pork International (CPI) will hold two technical seminars in Kiev and Odessa, Ukraine on May 24 and 26, 2016, inviting relevant importers, distributors, processors, retailers and food service operators.
