Mike Burger, a representative from the Association of Meat Importers and Exporters (AMIE) of South Africa was in Canada recently and presented at a meeting with Canada Pork International (CPI) and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

Burger provided essential technical information that will help CPI develop product descriptions for pork items that could potentially have access to South Africa with no restrictions under the current limitations imposed due to the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS). CPI also coordinated visits to a number of slaughterhouses and cutting plants for Burger.

His comments and the market intelligence gathered from this visit will help CPI and CFIA to request an expansion of market access conditions to South Africa.

In 2015, Canada exported 7,181.7 tonnes of pork and pork products to South Africa for a value of 17,3 million dollars.

CPI would like to thank the CPI members that assisted in this visit.
