CPI recently held two technical seminars in Ukraine: Kiev on May 24 and Odessa on May 26.

Representatives of Canada Pork International (CPI) along with five Canadian trading companies participated in the events. Also in attendance were more than 50 Ukrainian participants including interested importers, distributors, processors, retailers and food service operators, all of whom were invited to meet with the Canadian pork exporters.

The Canadian Ambassador to Ukraine, Mr. Roman Washchuk opened the event in Kiev. The program in both cities included an overview of the Canadian Pork Industry by Neil Ketilson, CPI Chairman, an overview of Canadian pork exports by Jacques Pomerleau, CPI President, and a presentation on Canadian pork quality and attributes by Michael Young, CPI Vice President of Technical Programs & Marketing Services.

In Odessa Ms. Yulia Marushevska, Head of the Odessa Customs Service, made a presentation on the new programs and procedures currently being implemented at the Port of Odessa to eliminate corruption and facilitate customs clearance. A copy of her presentation is available by request from chabot@canadapork.com

It is expected that the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement will be ratified later this year. When implemented the FTA will provide for Canadian pork products a free-tariff quota of 10,000 tonnes in the first year.
