Our industry is very pleased with the announcement that Canada has finally concluded a free trade agreement with South Korea and it is our most sincere wish that it be ratified and implemented as soon as possible. Not having a competitive access to South Korea has had a negative impact on our industry for a number of years. We look forward to rebuilding our business in this significant market in the coming years and to once again include South Korea in the list of the major importers of Canadian pork.
It should be remembered that it has taken a long time to conclude this agreement. This should be a clear reminder that since the Canadian pork industry is very export-dependent, we can never afford to fall behind our major competitors.
In the last few years, it has been is a daily struggle not only to maintain our access to the most lucrative markets but also to continue to be recognized as a reliable supplier of high quality pork. There will always be various challenges that we need to face such as maintaining our high herd health status, ensuring on-time delivery and facing sanction threats to name a few. Some are predictable, while others are not, especially those that are politically driven. We have to expect that the number and the severity of these challenges will continue to increase if the last couple years are of any indication.
To be effective in dealing with those issues as they arise, all industry stakeholders will need to strengthen their collaborative efforts as we cannot really count on getting significant additional resources and even at times on any outside assistance.
