Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) recently published the 2013 data for Canadian Domestic Exports of Pork and Pork Products.

The Canadian pork industry faced many challenges in 2013. Despite those challenges, Canada succeeded in exporting 1.184 million tonnes of pork valued at 3.194 billion dollars, comparable to 2012. This, in spite of the significant decrease (55.3%) in volume of export sales to Russia (because of ractopamine) along with the decrease (29.9%) in volume to South Korea (due to competition from suppliers with free-trade agreements in place with South Korea in 2013).

Markets with considerable growth included:

— Chile imported 12,395 tonnes in 2013, an increase of 219%
— Colombia imported 11,818 tonnes, an increase of 57%
— Ukraine imported 11,560 tonnes in 2013, an increase of 662%
— Georgia imported 6,353 tonnes, an increase of 76%
— Ecuador imported 3,513 tonnes, an increase of 709%
