Designed to promote Canadian pork exports, CPI’s Export Market Development Program provides contributions on a cost-shared basis for a member company’s export market development activities. These generic activities may deal with market access issues and with the quality and dependability of supply.

Canadian packers, processors and trading houses must be regular CPI members to apply.

Program description
The Export Market Development Program consists of three components:

Export Market Diversification (EMD)
Export Market Investigation (EMI)
Export Market Adaptation (EMA)

Export Market Diversification (EMD)
This funding component links directly with CPI export promotion activities and covers participation at a CPI trade show or seminar and more specifically:

Member attendance at CPI led/initiated seminars abroad;
Member attendance at trade shows in which CPI has a booth;
Members representing CPI at an international trade show;
Member attendance at table top or solo shows organized by the Canadian Government.

Export Market Investigation (EMI)
This component covers outgoing missions to targeted markets as the need arises during the year. To qualify, the mission must be incremental in nature (i.e. new market or market segment, developing of new products, meeting new customers) and must be deemed by CPI of benefit to two or more regular members. The lead company must provide a report which will be made available to all members.

Export Market Adaptation (EMA)
This component covers incoming missions from targeted markets to Canada. It must be deemed by CPI that there is a benefit to the Canadian pork industry. These visits must be incremental in nature and are mostly undertaken to train packers’ staff on foreign specs or to show foreign buyers the quality and the availability of Canadian pork products. The lead company must provide a report which will be made available to all members.

Eligibility requirements
Not to exceed $10,000 per project per company. CPI will collect a 10% processing fee per project claim (minimum $200 per claim).
Per diems will be allocated to cover daily expenses (meals, hotel accommodation, local or in-city transportation, such as taxis, bus, rentals, etc.) All hotel invoices should state the name of the traveller(s). Per diems allocated are:

 
- Outside Canada (EMD and EMI) : $200/day/person*
* Foreign representatives of CPI members are not eligible
 
- In Canada (EMA): $100/day/person**
** Canadians and foreign representatives of CPI members are not eligible

Domestic flights and hotel invoices/per diems within Canada will not be reimbursed for CPI member representatives.
The lowest economy airfare and out-of-city air transportation will be reimbursed at 50% (original receipts required). A copy of hotel bills is required to verify the trip took place.
The program does not reimburse GST/HST, additional fees for additional luggage, fees for seat selection or travel insurance.
Expenses from foreign representatives of CPI members are not eligible (staff based outside Canada).
Visiting countries other than the one where the trade show and/or CPI seminar took place will be eligible but hotel bills are required to calculate per diem allocation.
Under the terms and conditions of the AgriMarketing program, only the lowest economy fare (Flex) can be reimbursed. No Business Class fare is eligible for reimbursement. The maximum for reimbursement is as follows:

 
- East-Asia (Japan, China and South Korea) - $3,000
 
- Russia - $2,500
 
- European Union - $2,000

For other destinations, CPI will look at the Air Canada Flex fares to determine if the travel claim is reasonable.
More than one identical trip to a market is not eligible per fiscal year for EMI projects (i.e. visiting the same client in more than one occasion). Exceptions could be made if the applicant can demonstrate to the Approval Committee that more than one trip is required to develop a new business.

Participation fees
A participation fee will be charged for each trade show that will vary between $500 and $3,000. The cost of individual company semi-private booth will be in addition. The participation fee for CPI seminars taking place on the same trip are $500 per company.
Participating companies will be invoiced at least one month prior to the event (trade show or seminar). Payment must be received before the event takes place in order to be allowed to participate.
Funding will not be available to CPI members applying for travel assistance at the time of a show where CPI has a booth if the member is not participating in the booth.

Application Process
For EMD projects, registration form for CPI activities must be completed and signed before the deadline. Please contact CPI to receive the most recent copy of the form for the upcoming CPI activities.

For EMI and EMA projects, completed standard application forms are be forwarded to CPI prior to project execution, as all projects first need to be approved by the CPI Approval Committee.

Report
Submission of a report is mandatory and must be completed using the form provided by CPI.
The report must be completed using a word processor; no hand-written reports will be accepted.
For EMD projects, a EMI report must be completed for each country visited during the same trip when visiting countries other than the one where the trade show and/or CPI seminar took place, in addition to the EMD report.

Project reimbursement and payment procedures
Per diem calculations are based on the dates shown on copies of hotel invoices. Per diem for one travel day is also allowed, but only at 50% ($100 for EMD and EMI and $50 for EMA). Airfare reimbursement is limited to lowest economy fare only. Applicants should submit the documents outlined along with their report. Do not submit an invoice to CPI for these expenses.

The applicant must submit his claim and the mandatory report no later than 30 days after the project has been completed. CPI will then submit that claim for reimbursement to the AgriMarketing Secretariat. Once the refund is received, CPI will reimburse that amount, less 10% for management fee (minimum $200) to the applicant. CPI will not reimburse travel claims from past fiscal years.
