This fall, Canada Pork International will present a series of seminars in South America. The seminars will take place in the cities of Medellin (Colombia), Santiago (Chile) and Montevideo (Uruguay), from September 17 to September 24, 2015. The seminars will provide an overview of the Canadian pork industry and Canadian pork exports to local industry contacts. In addition, there will be time for business-to-business meetings with potential buyers and distributors for each market.

Canada has Free Trade Agreements (FTA) in force with two of these countries, which provide a competitive advantage for Canadian pork exports. Canada has had a FTA with Chile since 1997 and a long standing commercial relationship with this country. On April 10 2015, Canada and Chile announced conclusion of negotiations to modernize the Canada-Chile Free Trade Agreement (CCFTA). The modernized agreement contains a new chapter on sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and technical amendments to the existing government procurement chapter. In addition, both countries agreed to bring amendments to the CCFTA rules of origin into force as soon as possible.

Canada has had a FTA in force with Colombia since August 2011. Currently, preferential duties within the TRQ for pork are at 4%. As of 2016, duties will be at 0% and the TRQ will reach 5,750 MT.

Although Canada does not have a FTA with Uruguay, there is an Agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay for the Promotion and Protection of Investments. Uruguay has also granted access to all CFIA inspected pork plants.

Canada exported 13,360 tonnes of Canadian pork and pork products to Chile in 2014 compared to 2013 with exports of 12,320 tonnes, an increase of 7.6% compared to 2013, Chile is now the 12th export market in term of volume for Canadian pork . Exports to Colombia have decreased by 17% compared to last year with 11,818 tonnes in 2013 and 9,806 tonnes in 2014. Finally, exports to Uruguay remain low with 907 tonnes in 2013 and 591 tonnes in 2014, a decrease of 34.8%.
