BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

Financial Report
The annual financial audit will take place in early June 2012.

Confidentiality Agreement
All staff members have now signed the Confidentiality Agreement adopted at the last Board meeting.

New category of members – Affiliated members
The New Membership Committee has been mandated to determine membership dues, eligibility criteria and benefits to Affiliated Members.

Lobbying and Trade Advocacy Functions
A document titled “Trade Related Roles and Responsibilities” which is the result of a workshop session with the CMC, CPC and CPI was submitted. The document outlines the respective roles and responsibilities of each of the three organizations in regards to the four following areas: Development and Communication of Policy Issues Related to Technical Constraints; Development in Communication of Positions on Trade Negotiations; Pork Promotion and Services within International Markets; and Trade Advocacy to International and Foreign Organization.

International Pork Marketing Fund Performance Indicators Report
The recommendations included in the Performance Measurement Framework document were adopted.

South Korea – Free Trade Agreement
The Canadian Government is seeking to reengage South Korea in order to finalize the FTA. The Federal Government has asked the Canadian industry to see if there is support for this initiative from South Korean importers. CPI will work with other industry groups to identify possible activities in that regard.

Japan – Economic Partnership Agreement and Gate Price Enforcement
The Canadian government will seek to ensure that there are no discrepancies in the enforcement of the Gate Price import regime.

In regards to the EPA the Canadian Government opening negotiating position is to seek an unlimited free access. However, CPI will consult Canadian exporters and Japanese importers on possible negotiating options to be submitted to the Canadian Government should the Japanese Government be not willing to accept that position.

EU - CETA
The Canadian Government is still looking at finalizing an agreement by the end of the year. A contact group within CPI has been established to formulate a Canadian pork industry position.

Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP)
Canada, Mexico and Japan have indicated an interest to join the TPP.

CPI Market Access Report
CPI now has access to all export certificates and annexes of the CFIA Meat Inspection Manual’s Chapter 11 (exports). However, CPI is not be allowed to distribute copies to its members who will still have to get them from the CFIA.

CPI has been asked to survey members on the large number of labels required by Russia and request CFIA to seek with the Russian veterinary services that it be simplified.

Veterinary Visits Update
A Ukrainian inspection visit took place in Quebec and Ontario earlier this year. The official report is yet to be received

Export Certification
CPI has hired a consultant to further investigate with other agri-food sectors industries what is required to develop a proposal to be submitted to CFIA in regards to electronic certification with the target implementation date of December 2013.

Argentina and Brazil
An outreach mission to Argentina and SIAL Mercosur looking for new market opportunities will take place at the end of June. The mission planned to Latin American countries early September is cancelled.

Review of priority markets
The list of priority markets will be reviewed as part of the Strategic Planning 2013-2018 process.

Implementation of current FTAs
Costa Rica has agreed to modernize the agreement and it could have an impact on Canadian pork access. Colombia has clarified the management of the TRQ for Canadian pork.

National Pork Marketing Strategy
The Validation and Development of the Canadian Pork Story Marketing Strategy for the Domestic Market report has been submitted to CPC and CMC. It is expected that they will reach a decision soon regarding the funding of a National Pork Marketing Strategy.

Pork Safety Video
A working copy of the CPI Pork Safety video was presented. The video should be finalized this summer. The producer was also asked to finalizes video on Meat Quality video using material already accumulated from the shooting of the Pork Safety video.

GIRA Study on EU Opportunities
The GIRA report on the opportunities the European market could represent to Canadian pork exporters has been distributed to members.

Defining Canadian Carcass and Meat Quality Standards – Progress Report
The development of the tools on pork colour and marbling standards is in its final stage.

Korea –Incoming Mission of Korea Meat Importers Association (KOMIA)
An incoming buyers’ mission is being put together in cooperation with ALMA and Alberta. The dates for the visit remain to be confirmed.

Kazakhstan – Incoming Buyers Mission
The proposed incoming buyers’ mission has been postponed until further notice.

New Cut Charts
The latest draft of the new Canadian pork cut chart was presented. It should be finalized by the end of the summer.

All CPI members are now receiving by email the new newsletter.
