Seoul Food & Hotel Exhibition May 8 – 11, 2012
The Seoul Food & Hotel trade exhibition is the largest food retail and foodservice trade show in South Korea. 39,267 visitors had the opportunity to tour 1816 domestic supplier booths as well as 517 international booths featuring suppliers from 43 countries around the world.

CPI along with nine Canadian pork exporters had an exhibit booth at the show, as did Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC). CPI’s booth featured a sampling station, providing visitors the opportunity to taste delicious Canadian pork.

In 2011, South Korea was Canada’s fifth largest export market, with 93, 601 tonnes of pork exported valued at $233,409,582. This was an increase of 69.7% compared to 2010; the additional tonnage was needed in response to the massive cull that occurred in South Korea to combat the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease.

CPI notes that a Free-Trade Agreement between South Korea and Canada has yet to be finalized. Without an agreement in place, the Canadian pork industry will lose this important market to competitors already enjoying preferential access following the conclusion of their bilateral trade agreements. CPI and other associations are working hard to have the Canadian and South Korean governments resume negotiations and resolve the few outstanding items, one of which is pork.

CPI will reconsider participating in next year’s Food & Hotel show if there is no Free-Trade Agreement with South Korea in place by that time.

SIAL Canada 2012 May 9th to 11th, 2012
The Salon International de l’Alimentation (SIAL Canada) and the Salon des équipements, des technologies et services pour la distribution alimentaire, l’hôtellerie et la restauration (SET Canada) exhibition were held at the Palais des Congrès de Montréal.

This important food industry show brings together exhibitors and visitors from around the world. 676 exhibitors from 45 countries were in attendance with almost 14,000 industry professionals from 60 different countries visiting the show.

This exhibition now alternates between Montreal (in even years) and Toronto (odd years), resulting in increased interest and attendance. Adding Toronto has expanded the reach to a wider audience, with an increase of 25% of visitors from Ontario as well as an increase of 60% in the number of attendees from the rest of Canada over previous years.

Canada Pork International and several of its members, together with La Fédération des producteurs de porcs du Québec were at the show to promote Canadian pork. This event provided the opportunity for producers, processors and other industry members to meet in one location. It also allowed CPI members to meet with international clients attending the show. CPI also hosted a well-attended networking reception for members and clients.

SIAL China May 9th – 11th, 2012
SIAL China, held in Shanghai at the New International Expo Center, is one of Asia’s largest international Food & Beverage exhibitions.

CPI was there along with 22 Canadian pork exporters. This show presented an opportunity for CPI members to meet Chinese and international Agri-Food market professionals and develop important new industry contacts. This trade event increased CPI’s profile internationally as well as establishing CPI’s presence in China.

There were more than 40,000 visitors in attendance. The majority of Chinese visitors came from the retail and wholesale food sectors; however, there were numerous trade agents, hotel and restaurant managers and other F&B professionals.

A key market for Canada, in 2011 China (including China and Hong Kong) was Canada's fourth largest export market, with exports reaching more than 248 million Canadian dollars in value. That represents an increase of 36% in terms of volume, growing from 109,792 tonnes in 2010 to 149,047 tonnes in 2011.

During the first quarter of 2012 (to March 31, 2012), exports of fresh, frozen and processed pork to China increased by 59.5% at 36,990 tonnes (compared to 23,198 tonnes during the same quarter in 2011).

CMC Annual Conference
CPI joined the Canadian Meat Council (CMC) for its 92nd Annual Conference, “New Opportunities in a Global Market” held in Quebec City. CMC’s Annual Conference is one of the most important educational events for the Canadian meat industry and CPI is always pleased to be part of the agenda.
